Marijuana smokers now have a fresh destination to put on their bucket lists: Alaska, which on Tuesday became the 3rd state to formally Okay marijuana use.
Following Colorado’s lead, voters passed the Alaska Marijuana Legalisation poll measure in Nov. Legalisation became formal on Tuesday, meaning that now “the use of weed (is) legal for persons 21 yrs old or perhaps older.”
You can find limits to this particular regulation, as you can find in comparable types in some other states. Folks still cannot legally have more than One oz . of weed on them. Nor can they harvest more than 4 oz . in their home. And consuming cannabis in public areas in addition to driving a car while high are no-nos.
Plus there is the truth that this law just isn’t entirely applied yet. The regulating structure allowing for business people to set up stores like those located in Colorado is still in the works, therefore right this moment it’s impossible to lawfully earn a living selling the drug.
Keep in mind, under federal legislations, medical marijuana is classified as a Schedule 1 drug. That makes it’s use a federal criminal offense.
Is marijuana lawful in your state?
Still, as in several states, there seems to be movement in Washington on that front. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder advised CNN in October he is “cautiously optimistic” as regards to weed legalization. Holder said the Justice Department is focused on cannabis distribution to minors, interstate trafficking and drug violence, not incarcerating “low level people who find themselves simply there for possessory offenses.”
Within the absence — some may say in defiance — of any sweeping federal change on marijuana, some states have taken the initiative.
Twenty-three states still forbid pot outright. However the rest of them have either legalized medical cannabis or perhaps decriminalized marijuana possession.
Colorado became the 1st to go one step further in legalizing pot, followed by Washington state. And today there is one more in Alaska.
